How this site makes money
Stated plainly and in one place, because a site that tells 869,807 households what they are owed should be legible about its own incentives.
Where the money comes from
Processed data, sold to the trade
The aggregates on this site are free and always will be. Where someone in the trade wants a substantial custom cut of the joined register, or wants it delivered each quarter as new data is published, we charge for that work. See the data page.
Those buyers are installers, suppliers, researchers and journalists. They are not the people this site is written for, which is the point: the readers are not the product.
Referrals, if there are ever any
There are none today. If that changes, every one of these applies, without exception:
- Disclosed before you act, not after. On the page carrying the link, above it, in plain words, not in a footer.
- Never exclusive. If we name one company we name the alternatives, including ones that pay us nothing.
- Never the reason for the ranking. No ordering, scoring or recommendation is influenced by who pays. If we cannot say which is best on the evidence, we say that instead.
- Never on the rate finder. The tool that tells you your tariff stays clean. It is the reason this site exists.
What we will not do
- No quote forms and no lead selling. We will not take your details and sell them to installers. This is the entire business model of the sites that will not tell you your rate, and it is why they will not.
- No paid placement. No company can pay to appear here, to rank higher here, or to be removed from here.
- No personal data, ever. The Ofgem register is anonymised to postcode district. We hold nothing that identifies a household and will not supply, model or infer it. Anyone asking for a contact list is in the wrong place.
- No advice dressed as information. We will not tell you whether a battery pays for itself, because that depends on numbers about your house that we do not have.
Why say all this
Because we said we would. The about page promised that if the funding position ever changed it would be disclosed here and on the page where the money is, before you read it rather than after. This page is that promise being kept, and it will be updated the day anything changes rather than the week after.
If you think something on this site reads as though it were written for a sponsor rather than for you, say so: editor@ownergy.co.uk. That is a fair challenge and it will get a straight answer.
